#16: Rijksmuseum and Sentimentality

The second postcard today is much more sentimental. While the post card subject is Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, the text on the back is describing my grandfather’s travels through Poland.

My grandfather (Witold) sent this post card to my grandmother (Pauline in English, Apolonia in Polish). Fun fact: my mom was named after her mother (Paula) and my middle name is after her as well (Polonia).

He writes:

Dear Pauline,

Arive in Warshow OK. Staing over nite in Kazik house and going to Olsztyn July 24 and then to Bydgoszcz.

See you soon

Witold
xx

How sweet 🙂

He had terrible spelling because he didn’t learn English until he was at least my age (I’m 26).

My grandfather spent the first part of his life in Poland, until WWII, and somehow he managed to make it to the US despite having been in a concentration camp. I don’t remember which one – my mom knows, but apparently he didn’t talk about it much. I don’t think I would either.

I have a couple other post cards that Pauline and Witold sent to my great grandparents – but those are written in Polish.

My favorite part of this post card are the two little kisses “xx” at the bottom of the post card (sorry, they’re a little cut off in the photo).

Where he went first: Olsztyn

Where he went second: Bydgoszcz

  1. Loved your post, Old postcards are something special. They always tell interesting stoies – moments in time.

  2. This is so beautiful – what an amazing keepsake. For class a couple years ago I had to do a presentation on the communist government in Greece and though my grandpa had left Greece for Canada decades earlier, he still remembered it all like it was yesterday – he was an excellent primary source 🙂

Let me know what you think!
