Day Trips and 3-Day Weekend Trip Ideas

One of my guidelines for 2013 is to travel more.

While I would LOVE to be able to take frequent trips to places like St. Kitts (click through for trip summary!), my work schedule and finances don’t allow it. So instead, I’ll look back fondly on photos from my favorite trips, and go on more local day trips, or take advantage of three day weekends.

For the past 6+ months, my husband’s two jobs have given him the worst possible schedule. There wasn’t a single day of the week when he wasn’t working, and he routinely worked 60+ hours every week. But his schedule recently changed, and now he doesn’t have to work from noon on Friday until 7pm on Sunday!

So for easy Saturday excursions, I made a list of places we could go in Pennsylvania. For opportunities like three day weekends, I’ve listed a few places beyond Pennsylvania that are reachable in less than a 6 hour drive.

In Pennsylvania (side note – visitpa.com is an incredibly helpful website with suggested itineraries):

  1. Hiking trails (Appalachian trail, in particular)
  2. Wine tours
  3. Brewery tours (Yuengling is the oldest operating brewery in the US)
  4. Bushkill Falls
  5. Dorney Park
  6. Hershey Park
  7. Catacombs Restaurant at Bube’s Brewery
  8. Gettysburg Civil War Battlefield
  9. Longwood Gardens
  10. Crystal Cave or Penn’s Cave
  11. Lancaster / Pennsylvania Dutch Country
  12. Philadelphia (Independence Hall, etc)
  13. Pittsburgh
  14. Centralia (My husband wants to go here, because the ground beneath the entire town is on fire!)
  15. Skiing at Blue Mountain or RoundTop

Near Pennsylvania (6 hour drive maximum):

  1. Atlantic City, NJ
  2. Wine tour (Finger Lakes, Long Island, Hudson Valley, Ohio)
  3. Baltimore, MD
  4. New York City, NY
  5. Washington, DC
  6. New Haven, CT
  7. Cleveland, OH
  8. Virginia Beach, VA
  9. West Virginia
  10. Niagara Falls, NY/Canada

I wanted to brainstorm a list of places within reach, so that when we do have time for a quick trip, we can pick from a list. I think having the options laid out already will make it much more likely we make the trip. When we are sitting at home after work on Friday, we just want to unwind and not have to make decisions.

My goal is to create a ‘travel calendar’ for 2013 with my big trips (Nashville, Mother/Daughter Europe trip, etc) and then fill in the blanks with some small trips, maybe once or twice per month.

We’ll take this list and come up with a few “spur of the moment” trips that can be done in one Saturday (i.e. no hotel needed), and then come up with a few other trips that would require a little more planning but might be a better getaway (e.g. Saturday through Sunday in Baltimore).

As I was making the list, I was surprised at how many places are reachable in one weekend. 2013 will be a good year!

  1. I’m doing the same thing! Gotta have a list of go-to places… otherwise we’ll just end up sleeping in all weekend 🙂 Happy New Year!

    • Thanks for stopping by – and also after looking around your site for a minute, I noticed that your alma mater is my alma mater! I saw your 2012 in Pictures post and my heart just about stopped at the picture of the clock tower! What a beautiful photo through the cherry blossoms 🙂

Let me know what you think!
